What is silicone render?

Silicone render is a contemporary, resin-based external wall coating formulated to combine long-term protection with a refined, low-maintenance appearance. Unlike traditional thick renders, it is a "thin-coat" system: a reinforcing base layer is applied, followed by a fine, flexible silicone-rich topcoat. This construction minimises weight on the substrate while providing a tough, resilient surface.

Key properties and benefits

  • Water repellence: Silicone resins are inherently hydrophobic, allowing the cured finish to shed rainwater effectively. Water beads and runs off the surface rather than soaking in, reducing the risk of water penetration.

  • Breathability: Despite being water-repellent, silicone render remains vapour-permeable. It allows moisture vapour from the building fabric to escape, helping to reduce trapped damp and the likelihood of internal condensation or mould problems.

  • Durability and flexibility: The resin-based formulation offers good elasticity and impact resistance compared with many mineral renders. This flexibility helps the render accommodate minor substrate movement and reduces the incidence of hairline cracking.

  • Low maintenance: The combination of water repellence and dirt resistance means painted or rendered surfaces retain their appearance longer and typically require less frequent cleaning or redecoration than conventional renders.

  • Aesthetic versatility: Silicone render is available in a wide range of colours and surface textures, from smooth to fine or coarse aggregates, enabling contemporary or traditional finishes to suit different architectural styles.

  • Compatibility: It can be applied over suitable masonry, brickwork, concrete and insulated render systems, making it appropriate for new build and refurbishment projects when installed according to manufacturer guidance.

At JVG London, we are fully qualified and highly skilled rendering specialists, delivering a quick, precise application that ensures a flawless, weather-tight finish.

We install our systems by embedding a reinforced fibreglass mesh into the base coat, providing the essential flexible foundation to prevent future cracking.

Our team then applies the through-coloured silicone topcoat with expert floating techniques, achieving a clean, modern aesthetic that eliminates the need for any future painting.
